1776 musical, an Americana Broadway musical comedy with a book by
Peter Stone and music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards, portrays events
leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in
Philadelphia, PA, in 1776; the show was nominated for five Tony
Awards and won three, Tony Award for Best Musical (winner) Best
Featured Actor in a Musical (Ron Holgate) (winner) Best Direction of
a Musical (winner) Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Virginia
Vestoff)(nominee) Best Scenic Design (nominee). After opening on
Broadway March 16th 1969 at the 46th Street Theater to rave reviews
from theater critics including Clive Barnes of the New York Times,
Richard Watts of the New York Post, and John Chapman of the New York
Daily News, the show went on for 1217 performances including a move
to the St. James Theater. In 1972 Jack Warner produced the 1776
Movie. The 1972 film version of 1776 was created by the same team
responsible for the musical. Ostrow produced, Hunt directed and
Stone wrote the screenplay. The production featured William Daniels
as John Adams, Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson, Howard Da Silva as
Benjamin Franklin, John Cullum as Edward Rutledge, Ron Holgate as
Richard Henry Lee, and Virginia Vestoff as Abigail Adam with many of
the original cast including William Daniels, Howard Da Silva, Ken
Howard, John Cullum, Betty Buckley and also a new Abigail Adams
Blythe Danner. Showstopper Cool Cool Considerate Men was cut from
the movie at the bequest of Richard Nixon who was offended by the
song. Mamma Look Sharp was also on the White House hit list as an
anti Vietnam War song, but was not cut from the movie. Eventually
Cool Cool Considerate Men was reinstated into the Director's Cut
DVD. After performing well for years in the Summer Stock & Amateur
as well as first class productions around America Todd Haimes of the
Roundabout revived 1776 at the Criterion Theater, Scott Ellis
directed. John Adams was played by Brent Spiner in the revival,
which moved to the Gershwin Theater. The cast album was released by
TVT Records on CD with music publishing by Keith Edwards President
of 1776 Music Inc. and is represented with ASCAP American Society of
Composers and Authors. A complete scene by scene syopsis is
